15-year engineering graduate education reform of Fuda University: service demand and the pursuit of excellence

In the 1990s, the layout of science and engineering colleges in Fujian Province was relatively insufficient, which directly affected the development of engineering graduate education in the province for more than a decade thereafter. The problem of irrational layout of science and engineering sites continued in Fuzhou University (hereinafter referred to as Fuzhou) until 2008. The summary of a Daigo empowerment stimulated the driving force behind the development of postgraduate education in the university.

Relying on the wisdom and efforts of a generation, after 15 years of catching up, Fuda has written a new chapter in the cultivation of engineering graduate talents.

In this process, Fuda has set up a “customized” special class around the integration of industry and education to cultivate high-level application-oriented talents in the industry in an order-based manner; Establish new joint training institutions, including the school-land and enterprise-enterprise joint education model – Quangang model, Jinjiang model, and run the college/laboratory to the industrial cluster area; A new industry-university-research innovation research center was established to run the enterprise research and development center to the university. This series of bold reform measures has become the business card of the postgraduate training of Funan University for foreign exchanges.

Fuda University has been selected as a pilot unit for the comprehensive reform of professional degree graduate education of the Ministry of Education, a national innovation institution for engineering master’s degree education, and has 1 national demonstration base for the joint training of engineering degree graduate students and 3 national “engineering master’s degree education characteristics engineering field”; He has won the second prize of the Postgraduate Education Achievement Award of the China Association for Degree and Graduate Education twice, ranking 16th in the country and 3rd in local colleges and universities.

In 15 years, break out of a local college road

In 2008, when the fragrance of dangui wafted out, it coincided with the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the founding of the university. Behind the applause and the grand ceremony, a group of truth-seeking and pragmatic Fu Da people deeply reflected on the issue of engineering graduate education.

They soberly realized that as a former “211 Project” construction university with engineering as its own responsibility, with engineering as the mainstay and science and engineering combined, the pattern of running schools at the graduate level is not the same as that of the school.

They summarized the problem into two aspects: First, the layout of the master’s and doctoral authorization points is not compatible with the service demand, and it is necessary to further improve the layout of engineering science sites, especially if there is no engineering doctoral program in Fujian Province, and there is a serious shortage of high-end engineering research and development talents. Second, the curriculum system of engineering graduate students, especially engineering master students, is unreasonable, the training mechanism of science-industry-education integration is not perfect, the training system for pursuing excellence is not sound enough, and the quality of training needs to be improved.

In the face of a series of problems that need to be solved, over the past 15 years, Fuda University has always been focusing on the main line of “service demand, pursuit of excellence” to carry out research and practical exploration of engineering graduate education.

Adhere to the socialist direction of running schools, and walk out of the “Fuda Path” of Li De Shu people. Vigorously strengthen the ideological and political work of graduate students, promote the three-round education and upgrading plan, and improve the ideological and political teaching system of Li De Shu people. In accordance with General Secretary Xi Jinping’s encouragement and requirements for the students of Fu University, carry forward and inherit the “three spirits” of Fu University, and guide graduate students to study diligently, develop in an all-round way and pursue excellence. Establish a system for the main leaders of training units to give party classes (ideological and political classes) to graduate students. For example, on September 28, 2020, Fu Xianzhi, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and president of Fuda University, gave a political class to the master’s and doctoral students of the Institute of Photocatalysis of Fuda University with the theme of “Being a Strivers of Scientific and Technological Innovation in the New Era”; On December 9, 2021, Chen Guolong, Secretary of the Party Committee of Fuda University, gave a special party lesson to the students of the Qingma class.

Constantly adjust the scale structure, optimize the layout of disciplines, and carry out the “Fuda Action” of service needs. Take the initiative to dock the needs of industrial transformation and upgrading in Fujian Province, optimize the layout of degree points through the following six measures, and strengthen the cultivation of high-level talents in urgent need: establish a dynamic adjustment mechanism for degree points, adjust and eliminate some degree points, and increase the number of degree points urgently needed for industrial development; Explore the establishment of interdisciplinary disciplines by independently setting up secondary disciplines; Strengthen the construction of basic disciplines such as chemistry, mathematics and physics, and promote the cross-development of science and engineering; Develop engineering master’s programs, actively control academic masters, and moderately increase the enrollment scale of engineering professional degree graduates; Implement the new first-level discipline doctoral program cultivation plan; Focus on promoting the new engineering doctoral training program.

Strengthen the ability to innovate and practice, and create a “Fuda model” that improves high quality. Through the implementation of the curriculum teaching materials improvement plan, the tutor team improvement plan, the science and education integration improvement plan, the industry-education integration improvement plan, the innovation culture improvement plan, and the quality management improvement plan, we will build an innovation-oriented and excellence-oriented professional training system. In 2021, Fuda was invited to introduce the experience of engineering graduate education in local colleges and universities at the Ministry of Education’s special seminar on accelerating the construction of “double first-class”.

Through a series of changes, the disciplinary layout of Fuda University has been more optimized. In 2021, the university was approved for 5 doctoral programs in one fell swoop, ranking 6th in the country. Among them, the approval of two professional degree doctoral programs in electronic information, materials and chemical engineering has filled the gap of the doctoral degree authorization point of Fujian Province. By 2022, Fu University will cover 9 disciplines, and the number of first-level doctoral authorization points will increase from 4 in 2008 to 14 (8 in engineering), and 39 first-level discipline master’s programs (21 in engineering) and 22 master’s degree authorization points (9 in engineering).

The layout of degree authorization points has achieved comprehensive coverage of the new industrial system in Fujian Province. Among them, the three leading industries of electronic information, petrochemical industry and machinery and equipment manufacturing in Fujian Province have achieved full coverage, and the coverage rate of eight strategic emerging industries such as new generation information technology, high-end equipment manufacturing, new energy vehicles, biology and new medicine, energy conservation and environmental protection, new energy, new materials, and marine high-tech has been fully covered, and the coverage rate of major industries such as textiles, shoes and clothing, food, metallurgy, iron and steel, pulp and papermaking, and forest products processing has also exceeded 93%.

Customized special classes, explore the upgraded version of joint training for graduate students

In the switch, the cooling fan is flying at high speed, and the vibration noise generated is disturbing. What’s more troublesome is that vibration can also easily lead to connector shedding, and the resulting safety problems should not be underestimated.

This common problem in the industry involves multidisciplinary knowledge such as test instruments, vibration mechanics, and materials, how to completely resolve this problem? The School of Mechanical Engineering and Automation of Fuda University has simply come to a curriculum reform, and this newly upgraded course will be opened in the professional master’s and industry-teaching integration class (hereinafter referred to as the special class).

In recent years, Fuyu University has carried out the exploration of customized training of postgraduate students in special classes. The characteristics of the special class are to deepen the needs of a single large enterprise, separately issue enrollment indicators (small scale), jointly formulate training programs for schools and enterprises, and set up separate class management. For example, Ruijie Network, one of the three major manufacturers of network equipment in China, and the School of Mechanical Engineering and Automation jointly built the Ruijie Network Special Class; Rockchip Microelectronics and School of Physics and Information Engineering, a leading enterprise in IoT processor chips, jointly established Rockchip Microintegrated Circuit Design Class; Wanhua Chemical, a listed company ranked 29th in the world’s chemical enterprises, and the School of Petrochemical Engineering jointly built the Wanhua Chemical Class.

Looking at the two concepts of “master’s degree” and “customization” alone, it seems that some old problems cannot be circumvented – the biggest criticism of the cultivation of master’s talents in China is that there is little difference with academic master’s training, and it is longer than theory and shorter than practice; Customized classes have gradually “cooled down” in higher occupations in recent years due to the limitation of students’ graduation destinations.

How to find a fit between business and students?

Supervisors mostly use the project system to bring graduate students into the actual production situation, and retain talents in the run-in between the two sides. In the past, the master’s degree practice link could not solve the above problems very well, the combination of practical experience and dissertation was not high enough, and the pertinence of students to solve practical problems was not strong; Enterprises have worked hard to cultivate people, and only two or three students have been signed when they are employed, resulting in some companies treating them perfunctorily and using the master’s degree as undergraduates.

“If in the previous recruitment model, the relationship between the enterprise and the student was not well understood, then the large-scale customized training in the form of a special class is to let the student and the enterprise have a process of ‘acquaintance, acquaintance, and love’, emphasizing the ‘ripe and ripe fall’ and making choices in the process.” Chang Kai, then vice dean of the Graduate School of Funan University, said.

Considering that in the current free circulation of talents, there will be a certain proportion of graduates in the special class when they are employed, so the special class will adopt the method of “one matter and one discussion”, sign an agreement with the enterprise, and negotiate whether it is completely open to employment or conditional open employment, such as requiring the return of a certain proportion of scholarships and grants.

Take the “Big Data Industry” special class jointly opened by Fuda and Yili Technology, a provincial-level leading enterprise in industry and informatization, as an example. The special class has the following six characteristics: the form of cooperation is a separate quota, the school and enterprise jointly formulate the training plan, separate class management, and the whole process of enterprise deep participation in student training and thesis research; The scale of cooperation will be adjusted according to demand every year, and 20 students will be enrolled in 2021; Enterprises set up scholarships for students in special classes; In the practice link, using the resources of schools and enterprises, select the best students to carry out short-term practice in domestic and foreign branches, and enhance practical ability and international vision; In addition to course study, the whole process is cultivated in Yili, and the topics of the dissertation are derived from the cutting-edge practical problems that the enterprise needs to solve, so as to achieve the deep integration of professional practice and dissertation; Students with excellent performance during the joint training period can directly join Yili after graduation.

Jinjiang model, Quangang model, the college/laboratory to the industrial cluster area

Located in Quanzhou, southern Fujian, the streets still reverberate with the song of “Love to Fight to Win”.

Here is not only “love to fight to win”, the important place of the spiritual inheritance of southern Fujian, the Quangang District under its jurisdiction is also the leading area of the petrochemical industry in Fujian Province, and the petrochemical output value accounts for about 1/4 of the province; Jinjiang City under its jurisdiction is one of the four scientific and technological progress demonstration zones in the country, and was selected as “2021 China Smart City Top 100 Counties and Cities”.

The inability to open up the “last mile” between talent training, scientific research and social service is a common problem in many colleges and universities. Here, Fuda actively explores the “Jinjiang Model” and “Quangang Model” and becomes the vanguard in solving the “last kilometer” problem.

In 2014, Fuda established the School of Petrochemical Engineering together with the People’s Government of Quangang District and Fujian Petrochemical Group. The “Spring Port Model” trains chemical graduate students and enrolls about 300 students every year. Through the model of “former school and back factory”, Quangang Campus helps to open up the “pilot test” link, gathers government finance, social finance, enterprises and other forces into the transformation of scientific and technological achievements, supplements the intermediate links, and builds pilot bases, experimental bases, co-working spaces and other entities in the school to form a perfect chain of transformation of scientific and technological achievements.

In the “last kilometer” of talent training, scientific research and social service, Fuda Jinjiang Campus is in the same line.

In 2015, Fuda and Jinjiang City signed an agreement to jointly build the Jinjiang Campus of Fuzhou University to cultivate cross-integrated, innovative and integrated high-level professionals facing Jinjiang’s advanced manufacturing industry and microelectronics industry, with a graduate enrollment of about 300 people per year, covering electronic and communication engineering, integrated circuit engineering, mechanical engineering and other majors.

It is not an ordinary campus, and it is not a copy of a certain model. In terms of park layout and planning and construction, Fuda creatively implements the layout of “two institutes and two parks”, namely the Advanced Manufacturing College, the Ocean College, as well as the Jinjiang Branch of the Science and Technology Park of the National University of Fuda and the Entrepreneurship Education Park of the University of Fuzhou.

The Advanced Manufacturing College of Fuda University was established in June 2019 in Jinjiang Campus. In the full-time postgraduate training, the institute has established a multidisciplinary cross-integration of professional degree postgraduate training system of “morality, intelligence, physical fitness, beauty, government, industry, education and research”, introduced the government, research and development institutions, enterprises, industries and other parties to collaborate on educating people, deeply promoted industry-academia cooperation, industry-education integration, science and education collaboration, built a multidisciplinary cross-innovation practice platform and joint training practice base, and formed a multidisciplinary tutor team.

Focusing on the needs of Jinjiang shoes and clothing, textiles, food, equipment manufacturing, new materials, microelectronic integrated circuits and other industries, Fuda Advanced Manufacturing College cooperates with leading enterprises in Jinjiang such as Anta, Heng’an, Jinhua, Jingong Machinery, and Seven Wolves to enhance the ability of graduate students to practice engineering and solve practical problems of complex engineering, while helping enterprises solve product development and upgrading problems, and enhance innovation momentum for enterprise transformation. In 2021, the institute will fund 19.08 million yuan for various scientific research projects, achieving a good start in the “14th Five-Year Plan”.

In addition, in November 2019, the “Fuzhou University-Jinjiang Microelectronics Research Institute” jointly established by Fuda University and Jinjiang Municipal Government landed on the Jinjiang Campus of the university, with a total investment of more than 100 million yuan, based on original and basic technology research, attracting high-end talents in the semiconductor field at home and abroad, facing industries and applications, carrying out research and development of new materials, new devices, new processes and new products, and is an important base for the cultivation of high-end talents in the field of semiconductor in Jinjiang.

The new industry-university-research innovation research center will run the enterprise research and development center to the university

Covering an area of 320 acres, the main building of Fuda National University Science and Technology Park (hereinafter referred to as Science and Technology Park) is an arc-shaped building, and the overall design of the U-shaped building complex seems to open up a powerful arm to welcome more enterprises and students to join.

The Science and Technology Park is located in the Qishan Campus of the main campus of Fuda University, and has settled more than 200 enterprisesThere are more than 50 scientific and technological achievements of chemical schools, and 21 high-tech enterprises have been cultivated.

The high-tech enterprises jointly settled by universities in the Science and Technology Park to train engineering graduate students is a “zero-distance integration” industry-education collaborative education model. One of the models, the Advanced Control Technology Research Center (hereinafter referred to as the Advanced Control Center), is a new type of industry-university-research innovation institution jointly established by Fuda and Fujian Zhonghai Chuang Group. Fujian Zhonghai Chuang Group is one of the largest automation and information technology providers in China. The enterprise provides instruments and equipment worth more than 30 million yuan and scientific research buildings with an area of more than 5,000 square meters; There are also more than 60 engineering and technical backbones in the pilot control center to carry out project research and development; The school has more than 20 teachers relying on the pilot control center to carry out research, and Zheng Song, a researcher at the School of Electrical Engineering, serves as the director of the pilot control center.

Since its establishment 12 years ago, the pilot control center has been actively exploring new models for the training of engineering degree graduate students in the fields related to industrial Internet and intelligent manufacturing, based on the transformation of scientific and technological achievements, promoting the collaborative innovation of school-enterprise teachers and students, achieving win-win cooperation between industry, education and research, with distinctive characteristics of school-enterprise cooperation, and establishing a model for the integration of industry and education.

Introduce a management mechanism for enterprise technology innovation. The two sides jointly set up four major centers of academic committee and management, research and development, technology and engineering.

The university and enterprise jointly built a library of postgraduate projects. Guided by solving practical engineering problems, a project library is set up around the scientific research innovation and achievement transformation of the industrial Internet and artificial intelligence industry.

The school and enterprise jointly train graduate students throughout the process. The school and enterprise jointly select outstanding tutors to participate in the whole process of training, establish a selection system for joint training students, jointly complete the design of professional courses, project research content and engineering training links, and form an industry-education integration teaching system that integrates key links such as subject management, software research and development, technology application, engineering training, and achievement engineering.

Provide sufficient funds and strengthen process supervision and management. The enterprise provides special operating funds of 500,000 yuan every year, sets up a postgraduate project supervision group, strictly tracks the progress of the implementation of postgraduate projects in accordance with the enterprise innovation project management method, and conducts weekly assessments.

The new industry-university-research innovation research center has trained more than 50 graduate students, and some graduate students have worked in well-known enterprises such as Huawei, China Mobile, Hikvision, and Meituan after graduation, becoming the backbone of research and development, and some graduate students have entered Southeast University and other well-known universities for doctoral study. The two sides jointly declare major scientific research projects at the national, provincial and ministerial levels, combine the training of graduate students with national strategies and key technological breakthroughs of enterprises, and cultivate interdisciplinary composite innovative talents. Graduate students are deeply involved in the transformation of research results and help users in various industries solve practical engineering problems.

For example, the cloud robot intelligent Go game system realizes human-computer confrontation, which has received widespread attention in the “2018 China Digital Summit”, and has successively “played against world champions Ke Jie and Nie Weiping”. The automated container terminal information control system that “came out” from the agency has been applied to the yard monitoring system of Zhenhua Heavy Industry Group’s Italian VADO terminal.

In the past three years, the pilot control center has successfully obtained a number of major scientific research projects such as the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, with a cumulative funding of more than 120 million yuan; since the cooperation, it has developed more than 20 sets of professional course training cases and scientific research devices, and has been selected as the social practice base for doctoral students in Tsinghua University, Peking University and other famous universities; And was reported by the official website of the National Engineering Education and Steering Committee as a typical case of school-enterprise cooperation.

Curriculum construction, so that teaching has a continuous influx of “living water”

Marathon and business management, it seems that the eight rods can not be beaten, why can it attract so many graduate students to listen to the lecture seriously, and even applaud, frequent interaction? This is a wonderful scene when Li Zixing, general manager of Fujian Land Port Group and president of Jinjiang Junior Chamber of Commerce, gave the course “From the Spirit of Marathon to the Way of Business Management” to the 2020 graduate students of the school.

This “Engineering Management” course, which has been added since 2020, introduces well-known entrepreneurs in Jinjiang and lectures in the form of examples of the entrepreneurial history of enterprises, enterprise project research and development management and enterprise operation management. The course is included in the compulsory public literacy course for graduate students, and is also a microcosm of the innovative graduate classroom of Fuda University.

In the opening of postgraduate courses, Fuda has highlighted its own characteristics. Since the founding of the school by Lu Jiaxi, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the school has gradually formed a tradition of combining science and engineering. One of the focuses of the “Fuda Action” is to strengthen the construction of basic disciplines such as chemistry, mathematics, physics, and mechanics, and to promote the cross-development of science and engineering.

Strengthen the construction of public courses in mathematics for graduate students in engineering, and according to the needs of different majors for the mathematical foundation and ability of graduate students, carry out hierarchical classification and accurate teaching of graduate mathematics public courses (probability and statistics, scientific computing, matrix functions), and build a “five-in-one” quality assurance system and control closed loop.

School-enterprise cooperation to open engineering practice courses, such as Fuda Electric College and Wanshan Electric Power Consulting and Design Co., Ltd. jointly opened a professional degree case teaching “Power Transmission and Transformation Engineering Design” based on BIM technology, so that graduate students can fully understand the hot spots and difficulties of the industry, take the initiative to combine theoretical knowledge with engineering practice, and further enhance their ability to use knowledge to solve production practice problems with the help of enterprise laboratories, fully mobilize the learning enthusiasm of graduate students, and broaden their horizons.

Break down barriers, build interdisciplinary shared courses, and newly open courses such as “Introduction to the Integration of Artificial Intelligence and Medical Engineering”, “Theory and Practice of Deep Learning”, and “Fundamentals of Artificial Intelligence and Cluster Drones” are open to graduate students of the university; Create cross-cutting courses in engineering and management, and open postgraduate public courses such as “Engineering Innovation” and “Safety Science and Emergency Management”.

The school has achieved remarkable results and bloomed the brilliance of talent training

After 15 years of intensive cultivation and forge ahead, the reform of Fuda University has achieved remarkable results.

Excellent performance in the innovation and entrepreneurship competition. Graduate students have achieved excellent results in international and domestic high-level discipline competitions. In the past 10 years, the university’s graduate students have won 326 awards in national disciplines/innovation and entrepreneurship competitions, including 236 in the engineering category (accounting for more than 76%); In the 7th China “Internet +” College Students Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, engineering graduate students won 8 gold, 8 silver and 9 bronze for the project leader or the main member of the team; 2 people won the China Youth Science and Technology Innovation Award; Won the national college students “Challenge Cup” extracurricular academic and scientific and technological works competition special prize 1.

For example, in 2018, the “Hypoglycemic Patch: Insulin Painless Drug Delivery Pioneer” responsible for the biochemical doctoral student team, and the “Magnetite Technology – the core material supplier of the first optoelectronic communication device in China” in 2020 by the team of graduate students majoring in materials chemistry, materials science and engineering won the gold medal of the fourth and sixth China “Internet +” college students innovation and entrepreneurship competition; Graduate students majoring in Computer Application Technology and Applied Mathematics won the “Triple Crown” of the International Integrated Circuit Computer-Aided Design Competition.

Excellent dissertations emerge. The excellent rate of engineering graduate dissertations and the pass rate of sampling inspection of Fuda University are among the best in the province; Zhong Jianfeng, a doctoral student at the School of Mechanical Engineering and Automation of Fuda University, won the highest honor of the national mechanical doctoral thesis; In 2019, Fuda became the only local university to be awarded the outstanding doctoral dissertation of the China Electronic Education Society.

The results of high-level application are remarkable. Engineering graduate students have played an important role in creating inventions, promoting scientific and technological progress and transforming achievements. In the past 10 years, Fuda, as the first completed unit, has won more than 120 scientific and technological awards at the provincial and ministerial levels and above. From 2019 to 2020, Fuda won 16 first prizes of Fujian Science and Technology Awards, ranking first among universities in the province and setting a record high. Graduate students play an important role in R&D forces. Among the scientific and technological awards at or above the provincial and ministerial levels as the first completed unit, a total of 86 engineering graduate students have won 55 awards as the main finishers (including 1 second prize of the National Technological Invention Award, 11 first prizes of the Fujian Provincial Science and Technology Award, and 3 first prizes of the Science and Technology Progress Award of the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation), accounting for about 40% of the total number of awards in the university, of which Chen Yiwen and Chen Yanhui, graduate students of motor and electrical appliances, as the second and third finishers, won the second prize of the National Technological Invention Award for high-frequency link inverter technology and its application. In addition, there are 50 graduate students in the provincial and ministerial level or above science and technology awards of Fuda as a participating unit, and 25 awards have participated.

High-level academic achievements promote the construction of disciplines. Nearly 60% of the first authors of ESI highly cited papers (or second-in-class supervisors) are graduate students. Graduate students have become the main force of the school’s scientific research work, which has effectively promoted the improvement of the ESI subject ranking of Fuda University. As of September this year, the engineering of Fuda University ranked in the top 1.676 ‰ in the world, the computer science discipline ranked in the top 3.867 ‰ in the world, and the material science and engineering discipline ranked in the global top 1.58 ‰.

Among them, China’s flexible high-resolution X-ray imaging technology was published in Nature, and the first author of the paper was Ou Xiangyu, a doctoral student at Fuda University. This technology was selected as one of the “Top Ten Scientific and Technological Advances in Chinese Colleges and Universities” in 2021 organized by the Science and Technology Commission of the Ministry of Education, which is also the first time that provincial universities in Fujian Province have been selected. This technology has successfully broken through the inherent limitations of traditional X-ray imaging technology, and the situation of China’s high-end X-ray imaging equipment and key components relying on imports is expected to change.
