An open database of more than 3 million free academic papers

Unpaywall’s database contains nearly 3 million freely accessible academic papers, and most researchers currently use browser plugins released in 2017 to access the platform. When users browse paid articles, the plugin checks their database for free copies and, if so, displays a green label on the computer screen that researchers can view by simply tapping on the tab.

The Unpaywall service works by searching for a unique numeric tag for an article (consisting of a string of numbers and letters, known as a DOI or numeric object identifier) that corresponds to the articles collected from 50,000 journals and knowledge bases.

Unpaywall is now integrated into thousands of library systems, search platforms, and other information products around the world.
