The Institute of High Energy Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (hereinafter referred to as the “Institute of High Energy”) was founded in 1950 as the Institute of Modern Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and later renamed the Institute of Physics and the Institute of Atomic Energy. In 1973, according to the instructions of Premier Zhou Enlai, the Institute of High Energy Physics was established on the basis of the first part of the Institute of Atomic Energy.
Since its establishment, the Institute of High Energy has pioneered and promoted the research and development of China’s particle physics experiments, particle astrophysics experiments, particle accelerator physics and technology, synchrotron radiation technology and applications, trained a group of outstanding scientists, achieved a number of high-level research results, developed many high-tech products, and made important contributions to the development of national science and technology. In February 2013, Gaoneng established the Dongguan Research Department in Dongguan, Guangdong Province, which is responsible for promoting the construction and operation of China’s spallation neutron source (CSNS), a major national science and technology infrastructure.
Located in Dongguan, the geometric center of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, China Spallation Neutron Source is China’s first and the world’s fourth pulsed spallation neutron source, and is a large-scale platform for multidisciplinary interdisciplinary research in the field of international frontier basic research and national development strategy. The first phase of the project has a planned land area of 400 mu and a total investment of about 2.3 billion yuan, which is jointly built by the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the People’s Government of Guangdong Province, and the legal person unit of the project is the Institute of High Energy Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
China spallation neutron originated from the foundation stone laid in Dongguan City, Guangdong Province in October 2011, and completed the engineering construction task according to the index, according to the construction period and high quality in August 2018, passed the national acceptance, and was officially opened to users in various fields at home and abroad. The successful construction of China’s spallation neutron source has filled the gap in the domestic pulse neutron source and application field, and the technology and comprehensive performance have entered the international advanced list of similar devices, which has significantly improved China’s technical level and independent innovation ability in related fields, made China achieve a major leap forward in the field of strong flow proton accelerator and neutron scattering, and provided a strong research platform for basic research and high-tech research and development in China’s material science, life science, resource environment, new energy, etc. It provides an important support platform for the construction of a comprehensive national science center in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, and is of great significance to meeting the major strategic needs of the country and solving cutting-edge scientific problems.
In order to meet the measurement requirements of smaller samples, higher accuracy and higher time dynamics in cutting-edge scientific and technological research, we actively promote the planning and construction of the second phase of the spallation neutron source project (CSNS-II), continuously optimize and improve the beam and target power, so that the overall level of China’s spallation neutron source enters the international advanced ranks, greatly expanding the breadth and depth of research capabilities.
At the same time, in order to further broaden the research field, strengthen the construction of large-scale scientific research platforms, and actively promote the prefabrication research of key technologies of advanced light sources in the south, and provide technical support and guarantee for the construction of advanced light sources in the south in the future. The Southern Advanced Light Source Project is designed as the world’s leading fourth-generation intermediate energy region synchrotron radiation source based on diffraction limit storage ring, while achieving high-throughput mode operation, which can be applied to all fields related to microstructure, such as physics, chemistry, life science and medicine, materials science and engineering, energy science and technology, earth and environmental science, nanotechnology, etc. The advanced light source in the south will complement the advantages of the already built Chinese spallation neutron source and form a world-class material science research center, which is conducive to further stimulating the development of scientific and technological innovation on the industry, and has a great role in promoting the development of emerging industries such as a new generation of information technology and new materials, and is of great significance to the industrial upgrading and comprehensive national science center construction in the Greater Bay Area.
