Full marks for the papers! Nanjing University assisted Xihe to complete all on-orbit test projects

Recently, the Major Special Engineering Center of the National Space Administration organized a summary review meeting of the “Xihe” satellite in orbit in Beijing. Director Zhao Jian, Secretary of the Party Committee of Meng Lingjie, Academician Fang Cheng of Nanjing University, Jiang Yixian, Chief Engineering Officer of Aerospace Science and Technology Group, Assistant President Liu Fucheng of the Eighth Academy of Aerospace Science and Technology Group, and representatives of satellite system units attended the meeting.

The meeting listened to the summary report of the “Xihe” satellite in orbit by You Wei, director designer of the Eighth Academy of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and the report on the scientific data and research results of the “Xihe” by Professor Li Chuan of Nanjing University. After discussion, the participating experts believed that the “Xihe” satellite has completed all the on-orbit test projects, achieved the engineering goals of double super platform test and scientific load test, the data obtained strongly supports the research of solar atmospheric dynamics, and the technical indicators of the satellite project meet the general requirements of engineering development and construction.

The “Xihe” satellite, fully known as “Solar Hα Spectral Exploration and Double Super Platform Science and Technology Experiment Satellite”, referred to as the Sun Double Super Satellite, was launched on October 14, 2021, operating in a sun-synchronous orbit with an average altitude of 517 kilometers, and the main scientific payload is the solar Hα imaging spectrometer.

Nanjing University is the construction unit of the “Xihe” science and application system, under the leadership of Academician Fang Cheng of the School of Astronomy and Space Science, a group of young teachers and students have fully participated in the whole process of satellite engineering self-demonstration, project approval, development, launch and test. The success of this major project is hard-won, and through the implementation of the mission, Nanjing University has also honed an excellent team with both scientific exploration and engineering practice capabilities, contributing to the building of a national strategic scientific and technological force in the field of space exploration.

In the past year of operation, the “Xihe” has gradually entered a good situation. On August 30 this year, the China National Space Administration released the report card of the “Xihe” exploration of Japan for nearly one year. It not only transmitted back massive observation data, recorded nearly 100 solar eruption activities, but also set five international firsts in succession, verifying the innovative advantages of “magnetic levitation” double super technology and new solutions for space speed measurement.

After the release of the first batch of results of the “Xihe” satellite in August 2022, the satellite completed the cable falling off between the cabins as planned, reaching the test state of “physical isolation” of the two cabins, and carried out more than 60 double super technology tests. The test results show that the wireless energy, laser communication, wireless communication and other work between the cabins are stable, the platform and the load work normally, and the attitude pointing accuracy of the load compartment and the attitude stability of the load compartment are increased by 2-3 times compared with the cable connection, reaching the international advanced level.

At present, the Xihe satellite science payload produces about 1.1TB of raw data per day, and after calibration, it produces about 760GB of level 1 scientific data that can be directly studied. These scientific data have been released through the designated website of the National Space Administration (https://ssdc.nju.edu.cn of the Solar Science Data Center of Nanjing University) in accordance with the data management policy, and have been downloaded and used by scientists in the United States, France, Germany, Japan, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Russia and other countries. At the same time, “Xihe” has joined the international solar exploration satellite joint exploration system, and has completed many joint solar observations with the United States Solar Orbiter and IRIS, producing rich scientific results and significantly enhancing China’s international influence in the field of space science.
