In 1990, after graduating with a master’s degree, he chose to teach in colleges and universities, and has since taken root in higher agriculture and forestry education for more than 30 years. As a teacher, he has dedicated decades of dedication to the front line of teaching and cultivated countless “three rural” talents; as a scientific researcher, he has continuously overcome problems and climbed peaks in the field of high-quality and safe production of fruit trees; as a science and technology commissioner, he has been in the orchard field for many years to guide and contribute wisdom to rural revitalization.

He is Xu Kai, a professor at the College of Horticultural Sciences of Zhejiang Agriculture and Forestry University.

Talking about the reason for choosing to become a teacher in a university, Xu Kai’s idea is very pure – he is from a rural area, and both undergraduate and graduate students are fruit tree majors. After the reform and opening up, fruit trees, vegetables, flowers, tea and other horticultural industries in meeting the needs of the people’s good life, helping farmers get rid of poverty and get rich and empower rural revitalization in an increasing role, the demand for talents in the field of horticulture is extremely large, he hopes that he can be a “more qualified” teacher of fruit trees, and cultivate more horticultural talents for the country…

In a blink of an eye, he has been teaching horticulture for more than 30 years. Xu Kai has always believed that it is a prerequisite to do a good job in the profession and cultivate students’ love for it. That’s what he thinks and that’s what he does. Xu Kai pays attention to teaching and educating people at the same time, and integrates the rich ideological and political elements such as the three rural feelings, ecological concepts, and Zhejiang spirit contained in the professional curriculum into every corner of the classroom.

According to the needs of regional economic and social development, Xu Kai adheres to the principle of “teaching follows the industry”, integrates the latest achievements of the discipline into teaching in a timely manner, focuses on the innovation of teaching methods such as flipped classroom and mixed teaching, and emphasizes the creation of a new classroom of “dialogue, openness, ability and question mark”. In order to make the classroom interaction more and more alive, Xu Kai actively advocates the “spirit of questioning” and attaches importance to cultivating students’ ability to debate and innovate. In order to take the core courses of the major, he devoted himself to the construction of the “Golden Course”, presided over the construction of “Facility Horticulture” into a provincial-level high-quality online open course and an offline first-class course, and “Horticulture Professional Comprehensive Internship” became a provincial-level curriculum ideological and political demonstration classroom.

To impart students’ professional knowledge and innovation ability, they should have more knowledge reserves. For more than 30 years, while teaching, Xu Kai has been based on the frontier of fruit tree research, mainly engaged in research on the formation mechanism of fruit tree quality, high-quality and safe cultivation, which also provides the freshest material for his teaching.

How to open up the passage of green water and green mountains into golden mountains and silver mountains, how to solve the problems of planting technology, and how to help farmers continue to get rich are the propositions that Xu Kai has been thinking about. In order to better serve the revitalization of rural areas, he insisted on serving as the provincial science and technology commissioner for more than ten years, leading the team of 12 provincial science and technology commissioners and 6 provincial agricultural industry technical service team experts. He led the team to fight in the front line of rural industry revitalization for a long time, and rushed ahead in previous scientific and technological agricultural support activities such as flood prevention and drought prevention in Taiwan, and the resumption of work and production during the epidemic, helping farmers and agricultural enterprises to improve quality and efficiency.

According to incomplete statistics, he has served more than 60 fruit tree production units such as Huangyan PingtianXiang Alpine Yangmei Production Base, Yuhang San Fruit Industry Co., Ltd., and Fuyang Linting Ecological Agriculture Development Co., Ltd., with the production level reaching the national advanced level; accumulative training and on-site guidance of 17,000 new farmers in Zhejiang, Anhui, Hunan and other provinces, helping fruit farmers achieve an increase of 260 million yuan; 126 of the trainees have become senior horticulturists of fruit trees, 53 have become fruit tree technicians, and many have become leaders in rural wealth in various places.

When Xu Kai became a teacher at Zhejiang Agriculture and Forestry University, the horticultural discipline of the school was still in its infancy, with few students, few teachers, and a bad practice platform. Every time you find a practical training base, it often takes a lot of effort, but the horticultural discipline is extremely practical, which has a great impact on teaching. It was at that time that a seed quietly sprouted in his heart: we must build a large number of “pro” practice bases inside and outside the school, so that students can “learn skills and practice” in “their own orchards, vegetable gardens, and gardens”.

In order to achieve this goal, Xu Kai has continuously worked hard, adhering to the linkage of science and education and the integration of industry and education, transforming his rich social service resources into teaching resources, and successively presided over the construction of 16 practical teaching bases inside and outside the school. Nowadays, he guides more than 300 students majoring in agriculture such as horticulture and agronomy to carry out practical teaching activities such as summer social practice and comprehensive internship in horticulture majors in relevant bases every year. The relevant bases have also provided a number of high-quality practical teachers and sponsored teaching funds of more than 1.3 million yuan, and the independent construction of these bases has invested 350 million yuan, providing an excellent practice platform for more than 3,000 students in agriculture-related majors such as horticulture and plant protection.

The quality of “teaching” has become higher, and “learning” is naturally more motivated. With such a concept and classroom teaching updates, his teaching performance in the past 8 years has been A, and his achievements in educating people have been remarkable. The quality of horticultural students’ “factory” is getting higher and higher: 58.3% of the undergraduate students he supervised are admitted to graduate school, 25.1% are admitted to civil servants or public institutions, and a large number of new horticultural talents who are “ambitious, willing to go on, retained, and able to do well” have taken over the baton, continued to cultivate and grow in the horticultural fields, and took the initiative to cultivate on the stage of serving rural revitalization.
