In November 2021, the Southwest Center for Theoretical Physics was supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China. The center is positioned to build a theoretical physics academic research highland and talent training highland in southwest China, unite theoretical physics peers in southwest China, coordinate development, and promote the common progress of regional theoretical physics. It will gradually become a national basic scientific research base, talent training base and academic exchange center with distinctive characteristics and extremely innovative in the western region.

“The specific product that ordinary people come into contact with is the result of the integration of multiple disciplines of industry, education and research, which can be understood as a beautiful house. If experimental physics is understood as the process of building bricks and foundations, then theoretical physics is the formula for making bricks and foundations. Hu Zixiang, executive director of the Southwest Center for Theoretical Physics, introduced.
It is understood that the center has set up three research directions of “particle, gravity and nuclear physics”, “strong correlation system and low temperature physics” and “computational physics and novel quantum physical properties”, under the special funding of theoretical physics of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, relying on Chongqing University as the core, and strive to make breakthroughs in some key scientific issues in the future and achieve a series of original research results.
In addition, the Southwest Center for Theoretical Physics will also cultivate a talent echelon around some basic frontier scientific issues in physics, build characteristic research fields, strengthen international and domestic cooperation, strengthen the training and introduction of leading talents, and focus on cutting-edge topics of deep material hierarchy and strongly coupled microscopic complex systems; Through scientific research, academic exchanges and talent training, the level of theoretical physics in southwest China is improved, the coordinated development of theoretical physics in southwest universities is promoted, and the discipline construction and talent training of theoretical physics in southwest China are effectively supported, and important progress has been made in some research fields.

On the same day, the Chongqing Research Center for Basic Disciplines of Quantum Physics was also inaugurated at Chongqing University.
Led by Chongqing University, the center will not only integrate the existing research teams related to the quantum physics industry of Chongqing University, but also cooperate with the “Chongqing Key Laboratory of Micro-nanostructured Optoelectronics” of Southwest University, the “Chongqing Key Laboratory of Optoelectronic Functional Materials” of Chongqing Normal University, and the “Chongqing Key Laboratory of Green Energy Materials Technology and System” of Chongqing University of Technology.
At the same time, the center will focus on scientific frontier issues such as “deep hierarchy of matter” and “condensed matter and new effects” focused on in the national medium- and long-term science and technology development plan, and at the same time focus on supporting the construction of “ultra-transient experimental devices” to promote the basic research and innovative development of the field of quantum physics in Chongqing.

“The Chongqing Quantum Physics Basic Discipline Research Center also undertakes the task of supporting the construction of Chongqing University’s double-first-class discipline – mechanical discipline – (physics is listed by the school as one of the three supporting disciplines of mechanical discipline), which will provide endogenous impetus for the development of intelligent manufacturing, new energy, quantum technology and other industries in Chongqing’s key development.” The relevant person in charge of Chongqing University introduced.
