New progress has been made in the research of antibiotic pollution remediation materials

Recently, Huang Xiaoli, Huo Tangbin and others in the Fishery Ecological Environment Research Office of the Heilongjiang Fisheries Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences have made new progress in the research of antibiotic pollution remediation materials. The results show that biochar-supported nanoscale ZVI iron synthesized by natural substances enhances the performance of the catalytic process. The research was published in Materials Today Sustainability.

Nano-ZVI is gaining traction as a heterogeneous catalyst, but problems such as aggregation, oxidation, or iron leaching limit its application, and suitable dispersants and supports may help solve these problems. Natural substances and their wastes have been studied as potential dispersants and carriers. In this study, nano-zero-valent iron complex (B-nZVI-BC) was synthesized for the first time using natural substances as dispersants and stabilizers, using chaga residue biochar as the carrier. X-ray diffraction and electron spin resonance studies have confirmed that natural extracts prevent agglomeration and oxidation of nZVI and promote the production of hydroxyl radicals. B-nZVI-BC exhibited better antioxidant properties than traditional nZVI, and the B-nZVI-BC/H2O2 system performed well in degrading antibiotics in water.
