New progress has been made in the study of glycerol glucoside, the natural active substance of cyanobacteria


The future development direction of the GG industry Is provided by Qingdao Energy

Glycerol glucoside (referred to as GG) is a class of isoglycoside active small molecules that naturally exist in nature, which can be synthesized by a variety of green plants (such as lilies, reborn grasses), algae (such as a variety of cyanobacteria) and some heterotrophic microorganisms, and play an important role in the organism’s resistance to and adaptation to adversity. Due to its good biocompatibility, stability to biological macromolecules, high moisture retention, non-cariousness and potential health and therapeutic benefits, GG has great application potential in cosmetics, enzyme preparations, food industry and pharmaceutical fields.

For a long time, the Microbial Manufacturing Engineering Center of Qingdao Institute of Bioenergy and Process Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences has been committed to the development and application of natural active substances of cyanobacteria. Based on the systematic basic research on the tolerance mechanism of microalgae salt stress in the past ten years, the center has successfully developed an advanced biomanufacturing technology for the preparation of GG by spirulina-scale culture with completely independent intellectual property rights – SCGP (SmartCyano Glucosylglycerol Polygeneration Technology). Recently, the relevant content was published in the journal Biotechnology Progress.

Since its first discovery in the lily plant in the 1970s, research on the synthesis, function, production and application of GG has continued to attract academic and industrial attention, and people’s research on GG has developed from “compound discovery” and “synthesis mechanism analysis” to “active function identification” and “synthesis/separation technology development”.

In recent years, with the revelation of new functions of GG in enhancing skin elastic function, inhibiting microbial growth, promoting the expression of cytoactive factors and anti-tumor, the application scenarios of GG have been expanding, and the market demand has grown rapidly. At present, through the two technologies of “biological enzymatic catalytic synthesis” and “non-destructive extraction of microalgae cells”, the industry has been able to achieve industrial production of GG, and both methods can reach the production scale of several tons to tens of tons/year. Among them, the “biological enzyme method” has the characteristics of small footprint, high efficiency and economic cost, which is suitable for the rapid large-scale production and market popularization of GG products, while the second-generation GG large-scale production technology represented by “microalgae cell lossless extraction technology” has the characteristics of natural source, environmental protection of production process and high product purity, which can meet the needs of customers and products for the use of high-quality GG raw materials.

The SCGP technology developed by Qingdao Energy is based on the selection and breeding of natural spirulina strains, and through large-scale cultivation technology innovation, the efficient and stable conversion of carbon dioxide to natural GG is realized in the process of accumulating high-quality spirulina biomass. On this basis, the team has also developed a green and safe cell damage-free extraction technology that does not rely on any organic solvent, and successfully prepared a natural GG with a purity of 99%, and the product has passed the EU COSMOS natural certification, becoming the first pure natural GG product in the world. In addition, the research team has further expanded the physiological effects of GG in anti-aging and wrinkle removal, anti-inflammatory and comfortable, improved and brightened skin, long-term moisturizing, hair care and hair care, nutritional nerve cells, etc., redefining the international highest quality standards and future development space of the product. Based on the above achievements, the center laid out 35 core technologies, successfully incubated the startup company – Qingdao Zhongke Lanzhi Biotechnology Development Co., Ltd., realized the commercial transformation of SCGP technology, and has completed two rounds of commercial financing.

Recently, the center has conducted a systematic review of the research and development process of GG in the past 50 years, elaborated on the biological source of GG, the genetic basis of GG, the regulatory mechanism of GG metabolism, the active function of GG, and the current situation of GG production technology and market, sorted out the scientific problems that still exist in GG research, and looked forward to the future development direction of the GG industry.
