New study: The breakthrough of charging lithium-ion batteries to 60% in 5.6 minutes may accelerate the promotion of electric vehicles

Electric cars are more environmentally friendly than gasoline-powered cars, but they have not yet been widely adopted. One problem hindering this shift is that electric vehicles take a long time to fully charge. New study: The breakthrough of charging lithium-ion batteries to 60% in 5.6 minutes may accelerate the promotion of electric vehicles.

Increase charging speed

Now the Chinese research team has successfully increased the charging speed of the lithium-ion battery to 5.6 minutes, charging 60%. They achieved this impressive feat by effectively improving the sequencing by adding copper coatings and nanowires to the battery’s anode.

Today, most anodes are composed of graphite and are constructed of a disordered slurry. In addition, the way the anode materials are arranged creates problems related to the size of the gap between them.

To overcome these problems of speeding up charging, the researchers paid special attention to the anode.

Change the standard graphite anode

The researchers first ran a particle-level theoretical model to optimize the spatial distribution of particle and electrode porosity of different sizes. They then used what they learned from the model to make changes to the standard graphite anode. Copper is coated on the anode of the battery, and then copper nanowires are added to the slurry. Heating and then cooling the anode compresses the slurry into a more ordered material

After upgrading the anode, the researchers fixed it to a standard lithium-ion battery to measure the time it takes to charge. They were impressed that they could charge the battery to 60% in 5.6 minutes and to 80% in 11.4 minutes. Get more cutting-edge research progress visit: https://byteclicks.com

The researchers did not specify how much such a battery would cost and when it would be ready for production. Still, this development is exciting for electric vehicles around the world.
