Chi Zhang has been engaged in the research of molecular-based nonlinear optics and optoelectronic functional materials for a long time, proposed a new method for the regulation and optimization of functional cluster skeleton and the enhancement of the light limiting performance of secondary molecular modification of materials, revealed the modulation law of functional organic conjugated primitives on the optical nonlinearity of cluster materials, developed a series of practical large-frequency doubling, wide-bandgap deep ultraviolet and mid-infrared frequency-doubled crystalline optical materials, and created a new direction for fluorinated metal oxygen anion-based mid-infrared and fluorinated strong electropositive transition metal cationic-based deep ultraviolet frequency doubling crystals. He developed the optical saturation/desaturation absorption theory of fusing conjugation units to modify and modulate the photoactivity of two-dimensional carbon materials, and was evaluated by academic peers as “the experimental research on spectroscopy and diffraction methods of photofunctional materials represents the highest research level in this field” and “the created organic-inorganic conjugated materials have great potential to become photonic or optoelectronic devices, and have advanced the academic frontier of nanoscale”. So far, he has published more than 450 high-level papers in international authoritative academic journals as a corresponding (common correspondent) author, and has been authorized 50 national invention patents, including 45 core patents authorized by the first inventor; He has presided over and completed more than 30 international and national scientific research projects.

Zhang Chi also cooperated with well-known scholars in related fields in Germany, France, Belgium, Spain and other European countries, Australia, the United States, Japan and other countries, and presided over the establishment of the National International Joint Research Center of “Photoresponsive Functional Materials” of the Ministry of Science and Technology, and the discipline innovation base of “Functional Molecules, Aggregates and Device Creation” of colleges and universities, and jointly promoted the construction of important international scientific and technological cooperation platforms; He presided over the establishment of the China-Australia International Joint Research Center for Functional Molecular Materials jointly approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology of China and the Australian Ministry of Scientific Research, which has become a successful model of national international scientific and technological cooperation.

Zhang Chi is a recipient of the National Science Fund for Outstanding Young Scholars, the leader of the innovation team of the Ministry of Education, the leader of the innovation team in key areas of the Ministry of Science and Technology, the leader of the discipline innovation base of higher education institutions of the Ministry of Education-SAFEA, a fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, the British Society of Materials and Mineralogy, the British Physical Society, etc., and was elected as an academician of the European Academy of Sciences with an important international academic reputation in August 2020.
