Research on the ecological and environmental risks of estuarine fisheries by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons has progressed

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a group of organic pollutants with two or more variable arrangement benzene rings that are widely distributed in the environment. They are derived from by-products of incomplete combustion of organic substances such as coal, oil, wood and tobacco, yet the bioaccumulation characteristics of PAHs in aquatic ecosystems in subtropical estuarine waters are still poorly understood.

Recently, the innovation team of aquaculture and nutrition freshwater pond aquaculture ecological environment regulation and innovation team of the Pearl River Fisheries Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences focused on monitoring the content, source and distribution characteristics of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in 17 species of estuarine wild fish, focusing on the ecological environment, geographical distribution and impact on aquatic animals with different living habits in estuarine waters, and clarifying their correlation with fish diet and geographical distribution. The influence of dietary pathways on the bioaccumulation of PAHCs is revealed, which provides a theoretical basis for studying the transformation and migration of PAHs in the aquatic food chain. The research papers were published in Science of the Total Environment, a leading journal in the field of the environment.
