Researchers have realized the combination of purple phosphorus and cold plasma to fight tumors


Tumor is a major hazard to human life, and the treatment of tumor is an important topic in medicine. The development of new anti-tumor materials combined with advanced treatment methods is an important means to overcome tumors. Purple phosphorus is another layered semiconductor phosphorus allotrope that has been proven to be the most stable phosphorus allotrope isomer, and purple phosphorus nanosheets have attracted much attention for their unique cross-structure, high stability and derived structure. While plasma is the fourth state of material existence, atmospheric pressure cold plasma has been a promising anti-cancer method in the past decade.

In response to the above problems, the research groups of Xu Dehui and Zhang Jinying, School of Electrical Engineering, Xi’an Jiaotong University, and National Key Laboratory of Electrical Materials and Electrical Insulation combined purple phosphorus nanosheets with atmosphere-cooled plasma to study their anti-tumor cells (A549). The results showed that there were obvious synergistic anti-cancer effects in vivo and in vitro, and it was found that purple phosphorus nanosheets could inhibit tumor tissue growth by reducing arachidonic acid metabolism, while atmospheric pressure cold plasma could induce apoptosis of tumor cells by increasing reactive oxygen species, in addition, anti-apoptotic proteins (Bcl-2, Bcl-xL and Mcl-1) of p-AKT and Bcl-2 families were significantly reduced after VPNS-CAP treatment, which are key protein molecules to induce apoptosis in tumor cells. At the same time, this work also verifies for the first time that the purple phosphorus nanosheets have good biocompatibility, and no toxic side effects have been found.
