“Su Mama” building! For the first time, MIT named the Research Building under a Chinese name

Recently, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) held an important ceremony outside Building 12, where the Center for Nano Science and Technology (MIT.nano) is located, announcing that the building was named “Lisa T. Su Building” in recognition of the outstanding contributions of su Zifeng, alumnus, chairman of the board of directors and CEO of Chaowei Semiconductor Corporation (AMD), in the field of scientific research.

For the first time, at MIT, a building named after a Chinese alumnus as a gift.

“MIT has played an extremely important role in my life. I am very honored and happy to be able to impact the next generation of students and researchers. Learning and practicing is irreplaceable, and I hope that MIT.nano will be able to cultivate the best and brightest technologists and innovators in the future. Su Zifeng said.

Make an outstanding contribution to the semiconductor industry

In the semiconductor industry, no one knows Su Zifeng.

In China, she is affectionately known as “Su Ma”. Because she makes the computers of game lovers use cheap and powerful chips.

This is a legendary Chinese woman, under her gentle, smiling appearance, but with a very rational personality and likes to do challenging things. And her resume reflects the four words of “elite scholar”.

In 1986, Su Zifeng entered the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he studied one of the most difficult majors in school, electrical engineering, and earned bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees in electrical engineering.

After graduating with a doctorate, she has worked in a number of large companies and has made great achievements in chip research and development. One of the most noteworthy is that she joined AMD in 2012, which was in decline at the time, as a giant in the chip industry in the past, AMD lost money year after year, and no one wanted to take this “mess”.

Su Zifeng wanted to use her own methods to turn the tide, and from the time she became senior vice president and general manager of the global business unit, she began to save AMD on the verge of bankruptcy.

Under her leadership, a pool of stagnant water gradually came to life, and AMD’s career was thriving. AMD’s stock price has soared — from less than $2 a share to more than $110. Moreover, AMD successfully counterattacked with the second-generation Ryzen™ processor developed, surpassing Intel and becoming the global game CPU boss.

During this period, Su Zifeng received many honors. These include two honors named after MIT alumni. The two alumni are pioneers in her industry: the Global Semiconductor Association’s Dr. Zhang Zhongmou Exemplary Leadership Award, and the Robert N. Noyce Award.

You know, the Robert N. Noyce Award is the highest honor in the semiconductor industry of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), which is equivalent to the Nobel Prize in the semiconductor industry. Su Zifeng is also the first woman to receive this honor.

“To be honest, I never thought I’d be awarded the Robert N. Noyce Award, which is a lifetime honor. I am very happy to be recognized by my peers in the semiconductor industry. I love my job and hope to be able to contribute more to the semiconductor industry. Su Zifeng said.

Although I have graduated for many years, the impact has only increased

The Lisa T. Su building is located in the heart of campus, just steps away from the iconic “Infinity Corridor” and the Great Dome building. The building opened in 2018 in stark contrast to the rest of the building on campus, with a wide glass curtain wall that gives you an unobstructed view of the building’s laboratories. Located in the building, MIT.nano is home to a world-class cluster of laboratories designed to solve some of the biggest challenges facing humanity, from sustainable energy to clean water to finding cancer treatments. All laboratories and instruments in the building can be shared and used by any MIT researcher in need.

Su Zifeng’s contribution and influence to MIT.nano is enormous.

As an active member of the MIT community, she has participated in several alumni committees and delivered a graduation speech at the college’s 2017 Doctorate Conferment Ceremony. She served on the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Visiting Committee for 10 years and is currently a member of the MIT CEO Advisory Board.

In 2018, she established the Lisa Su Scholarship Fund to fund female graduate students who have made progress and achievements in nanotechnology.

MIT.nano director Vladimir Bolovi? said Su’s influence at MIT began as soon as she graduated. “Even years after graduating, the technical formulations she developed during her phD studies are still being used by new students and researchers.”

“As a visionary leader, Su Zifeng is widely known for making AMD a successful transformation, and is admired and respected by everyone. She is helping MIT.nano to push the boundaries of research and innovation at the nanoscale. MIT.nano is also attracting more and more researchers who are determined to challenge new inventions and solve new scientific problems. “MIT President L. Rafael Reif explained the significance of naming Building 12 after Su Zifeng.
