The first icebreaker of Chinese universities, the “Sun Yat-sen University Polar”, successfully completed the sea trial in the Bohai Sea ice area

According to the WeChat public account of Sun Yat-sen University, at 10 o’clock in the morning of February 3, at Wenchong Wharf in Guangzhou, the first icebreaker of Chinese universities “Sun Yat-sen University Polar” successfully completed the Bohai Sea ice trial mission and arrived at the home port of Guangzhou.

This voyage is the “debut” of the “Sun Yat-sen University Polar” in the sea ice area after the transformation of the research ship, and successfully verified the capabilities of the polar low-temperature navigation, ice breaking, shipborne scientific research equipment, ice area scientific research support, etc., becoming the first icebreaker in China’s universities and the third in China with polar research capabilities.

On January 17, the polar departed from Guangzhou on the coast of the South China Sea, passed through the four seas of the South China Sea, East China Sea, Yellow Sea and Bohai Sea, 1,500 nautical miles each way, tested the long-distance navigation and operation performance of the polar, experienced strong winds and waves on the way, encountered a 4.5-meter wave in the Chengshantou sea area on January 24, and arrived in the ice area of Liaodong Bay in the Bohai Sea in the early morning of January 25.

This voyage coincided with the strongest Arctic cold wave this winter, most of China has cooled significantly, the Bohai Sea sea ice area has reached a new high in recent years, and the air temperature has reached nearly minus 20 degrees Celsius. Extreme cold and severe ice conditions provided the polar-like test environment for the Polar.

“The Bohai Sea is the only inland sea in China, the lowest latitude in the northern hemisphere, and we chose to test the Bohai Sea area to test the icebreaking ability of the polar and its operation in a low temperature environment. Combined with the climatic characteristics of Bohai Bay and accurate short-term weather forecasts, after comprehensive research and judgment, we finally chose to set sail on January 17 to carry out sea trials in time for the lowest temperature and heaviest sea ice in Bohai Bay. Professor Cheng Xiao, chief scientist of this voyage, introduced.

During the sea trial in the polar ice area, in order to obtain sea ice and atmospheric environment information, multiple sets of shipborne observation equipment also made simultaneous observations of sea ice range, thickness, ice surface temperature, atmospheric pressure, wind speed and direction, humidity, visibility, etc.
