The Ministry of Education recently approved the establishment of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou) in accordance with the law. The university is a cooperative institution with legal personality organized by Guangzhou University and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (hereinafter referred to as HKUST), and is the third mainland-Hong Kong cooperative university approved by the Ministry of Education. The school’s address is located in the Qingsheng Hub Block of Nansha District, Guangzhou, and is scheduled to open on September 1 this year.

According to the Ministry of Education, HKUST (Guangzhou) integrates high-quality educational resources from the mainland and Hong Kong, explores cutting-edge interdisciplinary construction, and innovates talent training models, which is of positive significance for cultivating innovative talents with an international perspective, promoting the comprehensive reform of national higher education, promoting the integrated development of education between the mainland and Hong Kong, and serving the construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

It took nearly 3 years to build and 20 months to build

HKUST (Guangzhou) is the first Mainland-Hong Kong co-operating institution with independent legal personality to be established since the promulgation and implementation of the Outline Development Plan for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and the Overall Plan for Deepening Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Comprehensive Cooperation in Nansha, Guangzhou.

On 21 December 2018, the Guangzhou Municipal People’s Government, Guangzhou University and HKUST signed a co-hosting agreement, and Guangzhou University and HKUST signed an agreement on co-hosting to jointly host HKUST (Guangzhou). On 19 September 2019, HKUST (Guangzhou) was approved by the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China to prepare for its establishment.

At the beginning of November 2020, the first pile was laid at the site of HKUST (Guangzhou) in the Qingsheng Block of Nansha District, Guangzhou. After nearly 20 months of intense construction, the campus is now fully completed. The first batch of faculty and staff of HKUST (Guangzhou) have been stationed on campus in an orderly manner to prepare for the opening of the school year and welcome the arrival of students in September.

“Actively participating in the preparation and construction of HKUST (Guangzhou) is the primary task of Guangzhou University’s ’14th Five-Year Plan’ to promote open-up cooperation in running schools.” Wei Minghai, President of Guangzhou University and Vice Chairman of HKUST (Guangzhou), said that Guangzhou University will seize this opportunity to cooperate in running schools, develop in synergy with HKUST and HKUST (Guangzhou), benchmark the international advanced level, improve quality and efficiency in talent training and scientific and technological innovation, and better serve the national strategic needs of the construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

HKUST (Guangzhou) is administered by the People’s Government of Guangdong Province in accordance with the law. President of HKUST (Guangzhou) Ni Mingxuan said, “We are confident that HKUST (Guangzhou) will become a model for the integration and development of education between the Mainland and Hong Kong, an internationally renowned high-level university, and provide strong intellectual support and talent guarantee for the construction and development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and even the country.” ”

Chairman of the Council of HKUST, Liao Changcheng, pointed out that in just 30 years since its founding, HKUST has rapidly ranked among the world’s top universities and created a miracle. Today, HKUST (Guangzhou) has been officially established, marking the opening of a new chapter in HKUST’s development. He firmly believes that HKUST (Guangzhou) will inherit and carry forward HKUST’s spirit of pursuing excellence, pioneering and innovating under the framework of “HKUST as one, two schools complementing each other”, and continue to move towards the goal of building a world-class institution of higher learning.

Founded in 1991, HKUST is an internationally renowned research university with world-class levels in the fields of science, engineering, business management and humanities and social sciences. Guangzhou University is a comprehensive university organized by the Guangzhou Municipal People’s Government and a key university in Guangdong Province’s high-level university construction plan.

HKUST (Guangzhou) and HKUST will cooperate under the framework of “HKUST as one, two schools complement each other”, with independent legal persons, financial independence and equal status. The two universities are consistent in academic standards, teacher level, curriculum quality, etc., to achieve resource sharing and complementary advantages. Among them, in terms of teacher recruitment, HKUST (Guangzhou) will adopt academic standards and academic mechanisms consistent with HKUST, encourage teachers of the two schools to cooperate closely, and implement the fundamental task of Lide Shuren.

HKUST President and Chairman of HKUST (Guangzhou) Shi Wei said that adhering to the concept of “HKUST as one, two schools complementing each other”, HKUST’s innovative concept of developing integrated disciplines will take root and thrive in the soil of HKUST (Guangzhou).

Ye Yuru, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and President-designate of HKUST, is full of confidence and expectations for the future of HKUST 2.0, and said that he will work with President Ni Mingxuan and teachers, students and staff of the two universities to open a new chapter in the development of HKUST.

Enrollment in 2023 for 3 undergraduate majors

It is understood that HKUST (Guangzhou) is the first batch of three undergraduate majors such as artificial intelligence, data science and big data technology, and intelligent manufacturing engineering, and will begin to enroll students in 2023. Master’s and doctoral enrollment began this year, offering 15 master’s and doctoral majors such as advanced materials, intelligent transportation, and microelectronics.

In order to cope with the increasingly complex major challenges facing the world and human society, HKUST (Guangzhou) will adopt a new academic structure with integrated disciplines, replacing the “colleges” and “departments” of the traditional academic structure with “hubs” and “academic fields” (Thrust), promoting interdisciplinary integration, while vigorously developing emerging disciplines and cutting-edge disciplines. This is a pioneering undertaking in the global higher education community.

According to reports, HKUST (Guangzhou) has set up four major hubs such as function, information, system and society, facing major challenges and major topics, bringing together top scholars in different disciplines, encouraging interdisciplinary cooperation, and solving problems that cannot be solved by a single discipline.

HKUST (Guangzhou) carries out undergraduate and master’s and doctoral education, recruits undergraduate students in accordance with the provisions of the national unified enrollment policy, issues HKKUST (Guangzhou) graduation certificates, bachelor’s degree certificates and HKUST bachelor’s degree certificates in accordance with the graduation requirements of HKUST (Guangzhou) and HKUST, implements HKUST master’s degree and doctoral degree education in accordance with relevant regulations and school graduation requirements, and awards HKUST master’s degree and doctoral degree certificates.
