The latest scientific research results repair large-diameter corneal defects

Recently, the team of Xie Lixin and Zhou Qingjun, academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and professors of the Institute of Ophthalmology Affiliated to Shandong First Medical University, made new achievements. On the basis of the successful research and development of natural decellularized corneal hydrogel for the treatment of 3.5 mm diameter corneal defect, Xie Lixin’s team simulated the chemical composition of the cornea, selected two natural polymer materials, gelatin and hyaluronic acid, to construct a biomimetic natural biohydrogel with strong adhesion to wet surface tissue, which is used to repair large-diameter corneal defects larger than 6 mm, providing new means for the treatment of large-diameter corneal defects. The new results were published in the journal Advanced Health Materials.


There are about 4 million corneal blindness in China, and 100,000 new cases are added every year, and corneal transplantation is the main means of restoration. However, due to the lack of donors, there are less than 10,000 corneal transplants in China every year, and 95% of corneal blind patients cannot recover their sight. Therefore, the development of alternative materials for corneal defect repair has great clinical value.

According to reports, the biomimetic hydrogel has good transparency, biocompatibility and tissue adhesion. After injection into the defect site, the corneal defect is solidified and closed within seconds by visible light cross-linking, and further promotes the regeneration of corneal epithelium, stroma and nerves, and restores corneal thickness and transparency.

Zhou Qingjun and Xie Lixin are the co-corresponding authors of this paper, and Dr. Wang Fuyan of the institute is the first author.
