The research of the team of Huazhong University of Science and Technology has brought new possibilities for the diagnosis and treatment of malignant tumors

Malignant tumors have become the number one killer threatening human health, and achieving precision treatment is a major problem in the medical community. Recently, the research team of Huazhong University of Science and Technology proposed a new strategy to remove cancer stem cells, and developed a new nano-preparation with high drug load, which achieved significant anti-tumor effect in triple-negative breast cancer and brought new possibilities for tumor diagnosis and treatment. This achievement was recently published in the international authoritative journal “Journal of Controlled Release”.

In recent years, the incidence of malignant tumors such as breast cancer has been increasing year by year, among which the abnormal mechanical microenvironment in malignant solid tumors is the main factor leading to poor clinical treatment effect. The team of Li Zifu and Yang Xiangliang, professors of the School of Life Science and Technology and the National Nanomedicine Engineering Technology Research Center of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, proposed that the mechanical microenvironment of the tumor site can be improved through photoheat, promote drug delivery, and then remove cancer stem cells. Based on this strategy, the research team successfully developed a new nano-agent with high drug load, which achieved significant anti-tumor effects in triple-negative breast cancer.

Li Zifu said in an interview with China Science News that the new nanopreparations prepared by the team are different from the past. Previous chemotherapy may cause damage to non-tumor cells and cause side effects. The new nano-agents give traditional chemotherapy drugs an insurance policy, ensuring that the drugs reach tumor cells and are then released, which is expected to achieve a “precision strike”. In addition, the new nano preparation uses light and heat to directly remove tumor-associated fibroblasts and extracellular matrix, reduce tumor hardness, promote the normalization of tumor blood vessels, “equivalent to loosening the hard tumor soil”, increase the accumulation and deep penetration of nanodrugs in tumor tissue, so as to achieve the improvement of therapeutic effect.

It is reported that this work is another important research result of the team in the direction of hydroxyethyl starch nanomedicine. This study further proves the significant advantages of hydroxyethyl starch in improving the stability of nanodrugs, improving drug behavior in vivo, enhancing tumor accumulation, and improving tumor treatment effects. Li Zifu said: “At present, this technology is still in the laboratory stage, and to achieve clinical application, it is necessary to complete many links such as scientific research transformation, multi-phase clinical trials, and approval and review, which requires a long cycle. ”

The reporter learned that the research team has been committed to the research of hydroxyethyl starch preparation and production process for many years, and has obtained 4 varieties of drug production licenses, incubating Wuhan Hua Keda Life Science and Technology Co., Ltd. specializing in the production of HES raw materials, with an annual output of more than 100 tons, related technical achievements won the first prize of Hubei Province Science and Technology Progress Award, and the development of related technologies declared 20 Chinese invention patents, of which 15 have been authorized.
