University of Electronic Science and Technology of China: Cultivating innovative leading talents for the new era


It was the graduation season, a group of outstanding students such as Zhang Tianjing, a 2022 undergraduate student of the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (hereinafter referred to as “Chengdian”), received a precious “gift” – the first batch of “honor courses”, “honor research” and “honorary bachelor’s degree” certificates issued by the school! This is the first time that the university has implemented the undergraduate “honor plan”, which is a new measure to continuously improve the high-level undergraduate talent training system.

In recent years, the school has deeply promoted new engineering education and first-class undergraduate education, comprehensively reformed the curriculum system to enhance students’ innovation ability, systematically promoted interdisciplinary disciplines to stimulate students’ innovative thinking, and continuously sublimated the spiritual pattern to lead students to undertake the mission, and initially formed a “power model” for cultivating innovative leading talents.

Curriculum reconstruction: Comprehensively reform the curriculum system to enhance students’ ability to innovate

In the new era, the demand of the state and society for elite talents leading the future development is more urgent, and new requirements are also put forward for higher engineering education. First-class universities must respond to the demands of the times! In January 2016, the Guiding Opinions on the Comprehensive Revision of the Undergraduate Talent Training Program of the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China was issued, which opened the revision of the undergraduate talent training program with the largest reform since the university entered the new century. The reconstructed talent training program uses the latest concept of new engineering education to break through the traditional engineering education model and implement the results of the new engineering education reform in the system in the training plan.

In 2019, the school formed the “First-class Undergraduate Education Action Plan” and the “New Engineering Construction into Electricity Program”, established a new concept with “arousing curiosity and stimulating potential” as the core, and built a new project-based “new engineering” curriculum system of “starting from new students, running through four years, and step-by-step challenges” for all students, and a comprehensive research-based teaching curriculum system of “research-oriented teaching + research-based learning + challenging learning + innovative doing”, so that students can quickly step into the journey of improving their innovation ability from the beginning of stepping into the campus.

“Will intelligent robots become the rulers of the future world?” “How do you see a different world with infrared rays?” “How does the omnipresent light become ‘omnipotent’?” …… These interesting questions are the “desserts” introduced by the “Freshman Seminar” for freshmen, which arouses the curiosity of students’ hearts. The school provides diversified, interdisciplinary and cross-professional new student seminars for all new students, which can fully stimulate students’ academic interest and guide students to adapt to the “active learning” model better and faster.

It is understood that the University of Electronic Science and Technology has built a project-based curriculum system from “new student project-based courses” (compulsory) to “intermediate project-based courses”, “advanced project-based courses” and finally to “peak experience project-based courses” in all engineering majors, which are interlinked and climbing steadily, continuously stimulating students’ innovation potential and practicing excellent innovation ability.

The course “Advanced Challenge Comprehensive Project I/II./III.” taught by Professor Liao Yong of the School of Information and Software Engineering of the university is a typical example of “advanced”, which takes the design and implementation of multi-rotor aircraft as the carrier, spans one and a half years, and is implemented in three semesters, so that students can comprehensively apply the knowledge learned at each stage to achieve the corresponding functions, and finally complete the multi-rotor aircraft system with great interdisciplinary characteristics. This case has been supported by two industry-university cooperation projects of the Ministry of Education, won the first prize of the China Software Engineering Teaching Case Competition, was included in the China Software Engineering Excellent Teaching Case Database for promotion, and was used by the Ecole Supérieure de Rouen in France.

The school also continues to promote the deep participation of high-level scientific research teams in the cultivation of undergraduate talents, so that high-level “scientific research and education” into the curriculum, into the classroom, into the practice. A series of “‘Scientific Research and Education’ New Engineering Education Programs” such as the “Outstanding Growth Plan”, “Dongliang Plan” and “Climbing Plan” have sprung up and have been continuously implemented.

At present, the University of Electronic Science and Technology has opened more than 2,800 challenging, research-oriented and project-based courses every year, covering more than 140,000 students, realizing the four-year integration of innovation and practical ability training and speculative expression, teamwork and leadership training for all students, and forming a new engineering education reform environment and culture that the whole school attaches importance to and actively participates in, establishes a systematic guarantee mechanism, and promotes the reform of higher engineering education.

The new engineering construction “Chengdian Scheme” has achieved fruitful results: approved the national integrated circuit industry-education integration innovation platform, the national characteristic demonstration software college, the computer science and technology major was selected as the “National Basic Discipline Top Student Training 2.0 Base”, 47 first-class undergraduate professional construction points, 52 national first-class undergraduate courses, the first batch of 130 courses launched on the “National Higher Education Wisdom Education Platform”, in the national excellent textbook construction, the construction of the national experimental teaching demonstration center, Important breakthroughs have been made in the National Teaching Achievement Award.

On July 21, 2021, the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China hosted the New Engineering Construction and Engineering College Deans Summit, and the guests visited the course works of Chengdian students.

The University of Electronic Science and Technology was invited to make a keynote report on the construction of new engineering at a series of important meetings across the country, and held three sessions of the “New Engineering Construction and Engineering College Dean Summit” to introduce the effectiveness of the “electricity program” of new engineering construction to sister universities across the country, which was recognized by peers in colleges and universities across the country.

Cross-border integration: systematically promote the intersection of disciplines and stimulate students’ innovative thinking

“The new scientific and technological revolution and the new economy increasingly emphasize the cross-integration of disciplines and majors.” Huang Tingzhu, director of the Academic Affairs Office of the University of Electronic Science and Technology, said that the systematic promotion of interdisciplinary disciplines is the general trend of the reform of higher engineering education, and it is an urgent need to enhance national competitiveness for high-level engineering innovation talents and cross-composite talents.

As early as 2008, the school adapted to the trend of reform of higher engineering education, tried to break down professional barriers, innovated and implemented the “new engineering + new business” training model, and held a “management-electronic engineering composite training experimental class”, achieving good educational results. Subsequently, the “Electronic Information + Industry Industry” series of composite training plans were gradually implemented in the whole school, which effectively promoted the formation of a cross-composite talent training model.

In 2016, facing the trend of “Internet +” and “intelligent +” integration and development, the University of Electronic Science and Technology took the lead in implementing the “Internet +” composite double degree training program in China, integrating 6 majors of 4 disciplines to reconstruct its core curriculum system. In 2019, based on the advantages of electronic information disciplines, the school pioneered the “New Engineering + New Art” minor major – “Interactive New Media Art” major, cultivating new outstanding engineering talents with students’ challenging and independent creative experiences.

In recent years, the University of Electronic Science and Technology has actively docked with the national strategic needs, and added 12 strategic emerging cross-majors such as artificial intelligence, robot engineering, and smart grid information engineering, further improving the multidisciplinary professional ecology and providing stronger support for the cultivation of cross-composite talents. Not only that, the depth and breadth of cross-integration of talent training in the school have been further expanded, and cross-integration across schools and major disciplines has been realized.

The University of Electronic Science and Technology, together with Southwestern University of Finance and Economics, launched the “Computer Science and Technology – Finance” joint degree elite talent experimental class, which is the third enrollment this year, creating a precedent for the national cross-school and interdisciplinary joint training of talents; Together with the Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts to build a joint teaching and creation base of “art and technology”, the joint exhibition of students’ art works held went out of the campus and into the Chongqing Times Art Museum, winning the praise of the public.

At present, the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China has built a diversified cross-border cross-border composite talent training platform such as “new engineering + new business”, “new engineering + new art”, “Internet +”, “electronic information +”, etc., forming a new talent training ecology of “engineering and engineering intersection”, “science and engineering combination”, “industrial management penetration” and “process combination”, and giving students two opportunities to change majors in “large-scale enrollment and large-scale training”, without setting a threshold for transfer, and improving the “acceleration” of stimulating students’ innovative thinking.

The school also encourages students to climb the peak of science and technology, participate in the exhibition of new engineering project-based course works, participate in international and domestic high-level discipline competitions and innovation and entrepreneurship training projects, continuously improve institutional mechanisms, and promote the systematization, popularization and achievement of academic research, work exhibitions, discipline competitions, and innovative practices, so as to promote learning and promote training, and continuously improve the comprehensive quality and practical ability of college students.

At the same time, the University of Electronic Science and Technology has also extensively gathered social resources, deepened school-enterprise cooperation, industry-education integration, promoted multi-subject collaborative education, and built more than 50 joint laboratories and R&D centers with huawei, Baidu, Tencent and other well-known enterprises, and approved 409 industry-university cooperation collaborative education projects of the Ministry of Education (3 of which were rated as the first batch of excellent project cases of the “Ministry of Education Industry-University Cooperation Collaborative Education Project”, 10 typical cases of the “School-Enterprise Cooperation Double Hundred Plan” of the China Higher Education Association), and built more than 510 off-campus internship training bases.

In the past four years, the university students of electronic science have won nearly 2,000 awards in international and domestic discipline competitions such as the National College Student Electronic Design Competition, the ACM-ICPC International College Student Programming Competition, and the National College Student Robot Competition, and the school ranked second in the country in the 2021 “China University Innovative Talent Training and Discipline Competition Evaluation Ranking”, ranking in the top five for five consecutive years. Students have published nearly 1,000 high-quality academic papers (including more than 40% of the papers of the international top conference or international authoritative journals) and applied for more than 350 patents.

Mission-driven: Constantly sublimating the spiritual pattern to lead students to undertake the mission bravely

“Since the day of its birth, Chengdian has been a university that breathes with New China and shares a common destiny.” As the first batch of students of Chengdian, Professor Zhang Kaihua, 87 years old this year, has insisted on telling the “story of Chengdian” for students for many years. His “Chengdian Story Lecturer Group” is composed of old professors with an average age of more than 81 years old, and holds more than 100 lectures for more than 10,000 students every year, encouraging young students to inherit the “red gene” of Chengdian, carry forward the spirit of “truth-seeking and great atmosphere”, bravely climb the peak of science and technology, and strive to be a new person of the times.

Vigorously improving students’ awareness, pattern, literacy and ability to dare to take responsibility and dare to lead is an inherent requirement for cultivating innovative leading talents. It is understood that the University of Electronic Science and Technology has set up a student development guidance center, built a “school-college-class” three-level student development guidance system, and equipped with “academic tutors” and “student guides” from the beginning of students’ freshman year of college, guiding students to establish ideals, firm beliefs, strive for the present, and focus on the long term.

At the same time, the school vigorously carried out high-quality cultural activities such as “Chengdian Pulpit”, “Chengdian Afternoon Tea” and “Leader Say”, and invited academicians of the two academies, revolutionary predecessors, aerospace heroes, “moving China” figures, industry elites, outstanding alumni, etc. to enter the campus, share face-to-face with students, zero-distance exchanges, so that students “turn around and meet masters” and enjoy the spiritual feast everywhere, effectively broadening their horizons and increasing their viewsUnderstand, improve the pattern.

In 2016, the University of Electronic Science and Technology further launched the “Dongliang Engineering Plan”, explored the construction of an “innovation-driven leadership training model for engineering talents”, created the leadership education plan of “Chengdian Dongliang Project”, established a two-level “Liren Class” in the school, and carried out full-coverage, hierarchical and advanced leadership training in the whole school.

In particular, with the improvement of the ability to listen, speak, read and write the “New Fourth Session” as an important starting point, the school vigorously carries out high-quality cultural activities such as “Chengdian Debate”, “Chengdian Youth Speaking”, “New Fourth Sessions Ability Competition”, opens the “Classics of Human Civilization” course, and establishes the “Student Writing Guidance Center”, which provides a strong “booster” for students’ speculative ability, expression ability, writing ability and leadership ability.

The school has also built 335 social practice bases, and organizes students to carry out various types of social practice activities every winter and summer vacation, guiding young people to “measure the motherland with their feet, discover the Chinese spirit with their eyes, listen to the voice of the people with their ears, and feel the pulse of the times with their hearts.”

In recent years, the electronics department has taken most measures to guide students to pursue excellence and climb the peak, the undergraduate study rate has exceeded two-thirds of the year, the undergraduate graduates in 2021 have reached 70.29%, ranking fourth in the country in the “double first-class” A-class universities, and more than 50% of the undergraduate graduates employed have been employed in key areas, key units and grass-roots units of the country. Students have been widely praised by all sectors of society and employers for their comprehensive quality, solid professional knowledge, strong ability, and strong staying power.
