In late October, the National Development and Reform Commission officially approved the investment estimate for the “14th Five-Year Plan” National Major Science and Technology Infrastructure Pulsed Strong Magnetic Field Experimental Device Optimization and Upgrading Project. So far, the project has successively obtained the feasibility study report, preliminary design plan and investment budget estimate, etc., completed all the approval processes, and will start construction in Huazhong University of Science and Technology.

The approved pulsed strong magnetic field experimental device optimization and upgrading project is an upgrade on the basis of the pulsed strong magnetic field experimental device of the national major scientific and technological infrastructure in the “Eleventh Five-Year Plan”. As a comprehensive cross-platform with good results in the early stage of construction and high cost performance, the pulsed strong magnetic field optimization and upgrading facility was successfully selected into the “14th Five-Year Plan” national major scientific and technological infrastructure construction plan, which is one of the only two optimization and upgrading projects in the country. Professor Li Liang of Huazhong University of Science and Technology has also become the person in charge of two major national science and technology infrastructure projects in the “11th Five-Year Plan” and “14th Five-Year Plan”.
According to the approval of the National Development and Reform Commission, the pulsed strong magnetic field experimental device optimization and upgrading projectThe total investment is 2.096 billion yuanThe construction area is 47,000 square meters, and the construction period is 5 years. The project will focus on major scientific problems and national strategic needs in the fields of material science, life science, strong electromagnetic engineering science, etc., and build 110T super strong magnetic field, 70T flat-top pulsed magnetic field and 9.5T superconducting pulse composite magnetic field, 10 types of experimental test systems and facility support basic platforms. The legal entity of the project is Huazhong University of Science and Technology, and the participating units include the Institute of Electrical Engineering of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Precision Measurement Science and Technology Innovation of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Peking University, Fudan University and Nanjing University.
The pulsed strong magnetic field experimental device started in 2008, completed in 2013, and officially opened to the public in 2014, with a total of 82,521 hours of operation, creating a number of world records of pulsed magnetic field parameters such as 64T pulse flat-top magnetic field, providing 1,828 scientific research services for 126 domestic and foreign scientific research units such as Peking University, Tsinghua University, Harvard University, Cambridge University, etc., and achieving a series of important results including the discovery of logarithmic periodic quantum oscillations. The completion of the pulsed strong magnetic field experimental device has filled the gap in the domestic ultra-high magnetic field experimental conditions and met the increasingly urgent needs of Chinese scientists for strong magnetic field experimental conditions, and has successively won the special prize of Hubei Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award in 2018 and the first prize of National Science and Technology Award Progress in 2019.
